What Are Ductless Mini-Splits?

Unlike central air, mini-splits are systems that don’t depend on ductwork running through your walls or ceilings to disperse cool air. While it uses Freon to complete a refrigeration cycle and has an indoor and outdoor compartment like other units, this system proves more versatile.

Each room has its own unit. While all of these units connect to the same outdoor compressor, you can control them individually. This, in turn, allows you to enjoy different temperatures in different rooms.

Ductless Mini Split Components

Ductless mini-splits in Staunton, VA, contain an indoor air handler or evaporator unit, each with:

  • Evaporator coils: The refrigerant in these coils draws in warm air and travels to the outdoor unit to dispense it
  • A blower: The blower moves warm air in and cool air out of the system
  • Air filters: The controlled air passes through filters before entering your breathing air to capture particles

The outdoor compressor or condenser unit includes:

  • Condenser coils that release heat from the refrigerant before it liquefies again
  • An outdoor fan that helps cool the condenser coils

  • An expansion valve that expands the refrigerant for one final cooling before it reenters the evaporator coils

Finally, copper tubing refrigerant lines carry gas and liquid Freon between the evaporator and condenser units. Electrical power lines and drain lines that dispose of condensed water outdoors also connect the two compartments.

Where Should You Install A Ductless Mini-Split?

If it’s wall-mounted, it should be eight to ten feet above the floor and no less than three inches from the ceiling. Ceiling-mounted ones should preferably be in the center of the ceiling.

Generally, the closer you can get to the center of the room, the more comfortable you’ll be. That said, you can also install it above areas where people frequently spend time — for example, above the couch.

    We had our heat randomly go out one day in the middle of the night & called all temp to see if they could come out & see what was going on. They came out very quickly to see to the issue & although the visit led to the unfortunate news of system replacement, im so glad we went with all temp. They got us on the schedule ASAP to get our new system put in. We dealt with Dylan for our initial visit & he was super informative & kind.     We received multiple quotes for a heat pump replacement and All Temp was the clear choice. They provided a custom solution after thoroughly assessing the needs of our home with calculations that no other company did (other companies only quoted for a heat pump of the same size we had and did no math of the size of the home’s needs to see if it was proper- turns out what the builder put in wasn’t!) and took the time to explain things and answer all the questions that we had about the new system. We are enjoying the new heat pump and enjoyed the quality service provided by All Temp throughout all phases of the process.
