5 AC Mistakes to Avoid

Summer is one of the most wonderful times of the year, whether you’re planning an extravagant vacation or you plan to spend as much time within the comfort of your home. Make your summer even better by avoiding these common AC mistakes.

Maintenance

While you might think that having maintenance done on your HVAC unit before it is broken is a waste of money, we can assure you that it will save you a great deal of money and stress over time. By getting preventative maintenance done, you are pretty much ensuring that a technician will be able to catch any issues or potential repairs before the unit breaks down in the middle of summer.

Not to mention, calling for an HVAC repair in the middle of a heat wave could be a major hassle since you will likely not be the only one who has run into this problem.

Air Filters

One aspect of HVAC units that are often neglected are the air filters. In a relatively clean home free of pets, smoke, and an excess amount of dirt, your air filters should be replaced every six months. But in a house with any of the factors that we mentioned above, your air filters should be replaced closer to every two months.

Air filter replacement is even more important for homes with small children or babies since their immune systems have not fully developed yet.

Coils

Don’t forget to clean the coils on your HVAC unit before summer starts. The evaporator and condenser coils are responsible for pulling hot air from within your home so that the internal temperature lowers. If these coils have even a slight coating of dust on them, then their efficiency decreases drastically.

When your HVAC unit isn’t performing at optimal efficiency, this causes the unit to run longer and work harder which will subsequently increase your energy bills.

Ventilation

When temperatures soar or drop drastically, we tend to respond by closing our house up. While this tactic can be beneficial in the middle of the day when the temperatures are at their peak, it can lead to discomfort and worsening air quality if the house is left closed all day.

Instead, install blackout curtains to keep closed on your windows in the middle of the day, but open the curtains and the windows in the early mornings and in the evenings to allow fresh air into your home.

Cooking

This may seem like an obscure tip or mistake, but cooking inside on your stove top or in your oven generates a lot of unnecessary heat that ends up circulating throughout your home raising its temperature. Instead of cooking inside this summer, try barbecuing more or making cold dinners like sandwiches and pasta salads. This is a great way to lower the temperature in your home and to spend more time with family and friends.

Fans

This is a minor mistake, but one that could have a significant impact on your comfort within your home. Your ceiling fan has two settings, one for winter and one for summer. Make sure that as the temperatures begin to increase you turn your fan to its summer setting.

This setting ensures that your fan rotates in a counterclockwise direction so that the air is forced down into the room rather than towards the ceiling.

At All-Temp Heating & Cooling, we can help you with all of your cooling needs from the installation of your HVAC unit, to seasonal maintenance and even once you need repairs on your unit.
